ARTWORKS

« Vega Lopez is one of those poets who attempts, through his colors, his line, his posture, his pictorial pulsation, to rekindle our original universal memories, hoping that we would know how to inhabit the living again. »
— Coralie Bergdoll, Foresight Director

Vega Lopez’s practice is resolutely polymorphic, much like the ever-changing nature of their mediums; motifs and colors seem to slip from canvas to ceramics, passing through wood, paper, and walls. The artist draws freely from various realms of visual art, craft, illustration, and street art, shaping a singular, complex, and poetic visual vocabulary.

On dark, often flat backgrounds, colorful lines intertwine, evoking the geometric patterns of Amazonian art (recently spotlighted at the Musée du Quai Branly), the traditional Japanese tattooing technique of tebori, or the henna designs of the Middle East and North Africa. These ornaments and symbols—combined, transformed, and stripped of singular meaning—replace words to form a new polyphonic alphabet, further expanding the space for interpretation.

Perhaps, by intertwining narratives, the artist aims to offer a contemporary rewriting of myths, beliefs, and ancestral customs, inviting us in turn to encounter this global neighborhood—on an imaginary continent.
